the choice of anja schneider for remix duties was an obvious one, the pair first met on a shuttle bus to an event and in short stead paul was co-writing for anja, becoming part of the driving force behind her huge debut album ‘beyond the valley’, now she pulls out all the stops to reciprocate with this standout reworking.
first up on the package is the anja schneider remix of ‘three weeks’, the opening cut from paul’s recent album. here the pair, deconstruct the parts and rebuild things into a deep and hypnotic version that has instant dancefloor appeal stamped all over it. solid, chunky drums rub up against simple spacey synth lines and warm pads to huge effect. bearing in mind the superb quality of the original this is a job well done, and a real addition to this great package.
next we have the original of ‘three weeks’, a track named after the extensive time it took to record. paul had originally intended to record the album in 6-8 weeks, then ended up spending nearly half of his allocated time on this opener. but it has to be said it was worth the effort. this is a slice of solid tech inspired house with subtle vocal elements and a musicality that cuts through the records club based nature. excellent stuff.
finally we have diamant flute, another winner from the ‘me, myself and live’ album. deep and highly engaging this again displays paul outstanding talents as a producer, weaving melodic elements deep into the mix and retaining an incredible underground electronic sound.

roughly translated, hasta el fin means >the very last number of the night<, appropriate when you consider this is gigolos final release of 2009. the a&r process at gigolo is a constant and very simple formula! if hell likes it, plays it and gets a good reaction from the crowd then it needs to come out on his record label! no other record fits the criteria more the >hasta el fin<. this is a record that featured heavily in hells festivals and club sets and was played at the end of every after-hour he found himself. but its beginning is a little less finite.
the genesis came late last year when oliver ton invited various musicians for a jamming session. in the spirit of some masterful moments in music oliver ton and production partner ronald christoph captured something unique sounding with a dance record built largely around a vocal, guitar and piano performance. it was immediately signed to berlin based white records and assigned the fitting cat. no. of white999!!!
hell, an early supporter of both the record and label was smitten, personally requesting the license for gigolo. once this was granted he approached tony lionni for a remix. for many djs, including hell, tony lionnis >found a place< is without doubt one of the biggest records of 2009. so combining the talents of these two artists would appear to be a no brainer, and the results speak volumes. taking the vocal hook, layering it over a tough piano stab and italo style disco rhythm is the order of the day. as we approach the end of another decade for gigolo and the first of new millennium we are proud to present our last number of the 2009!

marcus mumford built mumford and sons after his long standing position as laura marlings drummer / harmoniser began to earn him praise from all who saw them play live together. his battered and raspy voice soars with emotion over massive swells of country tinged orchestral pop. lovelorn lyrics filled with hope, anger, fear and every passionate extreme in between mean mumford and sons are sure to achieve a massive amount of praise for their debut album sigh no more, which demonstrates the strength in both song and sound. togetherness is fundamental to mumford and sons. its there in the tightness of the arrangements, and the four part harmonies - its pretty unusual to hear pitch perfect harmonies that are also meaty, masculine and downright loud. and its in the simple fact that mumford and sons get such a kick out of playing together.

after the re release on clone and some hot tracks on lets pet puppies another one rescued production of marcus mixx from obscurity! mr mixx featuring project democracys is this dream for real? paired with 3 more of marcus tracks. these rare tracks were only heard mostly in and around chicago during the late 80s. is this dream for real? is a deep and moody chicago house track. deep, infectious bassline with a gorgeous female vocal, the kind of track that makes you instantly say, wtf? simple, timeless, effective. and so are the other three tracks. raw jacking house tracks just as we like it!

for almost as long as there have been djs, there have been dj tools: bonus beats, acapellas and ambient overlays have long been the stock in trade of selectors interested in more than simple crossfades from outro to intro. but back at the beginning of 2007, luciano put a new twist on a triedand- true idea with no model no tool. the inaugural release on cadenza split composition, a sublabel of the iconic swiss imprint, no model no tool revitalized the recombinant concept, offering djs a selection of readymade miniatures that worked like sonic building blocks—oddly-shaped bits and pieces designed to be stacked and shuffled to the djs delight.

rebolledo is an artist from xalapa, mexico, who is very much part of the comeme family of latin american artists. he s been around from the early days when he used to provide music for the buenos aires based bumbumbox street parties. so far he s had tracks on previous comeme releases, notably pitaya frenesi, but this is his first full release on his own. rebodello is the consummate comeme artist, with a quirky sense of humour, a unique latin american approach to dance music and a lean lo-fi approach to track making that is built to cut through on any sound system. lead track >guerrero< follows in comemes now established strange sense of humour, guerrero means warrrior and is a track about a >guerrero< who comes out at night and dresses in leather, it s all shouted vocals simple beats and 80s style synths. venganza y seduccion means vengeance and seduction and features suggestive panted echoing vocals over a cosmic disco bassline, while atmospheric chords build in the background, if this sounds strange it s because it is, but the combination works really well in a club.
the b side of the record is much harder and more techno-like - marchante is completely different, aggressive kick drums, a pulsing bassline and siren-like synths bring this track a panicked feel, which is offset by the way the drums build into tough patterns. raid features strange nonsense vocals over a pulsing rhythm track that reminds of old chicago acid, if it wasn t for the strange atmosphere. rebodello is a very welcome addition to the world of dance music.

downwards sidestep expectations again with this glorious limited 10inch vinyl release from tropic of cancer. two beautifully dark compositions that remind slightly of angelo badalamenti in >twin peaks< mode, or maybe reservoir dogs, if it had been filmed with a huge cavern as the soundstage. processed guitar and drones wash swampily over a simple drumbox beat, as eerie snatches of melody float in and out. as badalamenti himself said of his own work, >my (musical) world is a little bit dark... a little bit off-center. i think of it as tragically beautiful. that is how i would describe what i love best: tragically beautiful.< seems to sum this release up quite nicely too...

deetron pops in with two great remixes, turning the original into a stomping, screaming rework that gets just as epic. the believer mix is a 8 minutes epic featuring deetrons typical fusion of classic detroit techno with some crisp acid touches and corrina stunning vocals. the spring leaves mix shows a more soulful side with a deeper vibe, rhodes and rollin beats ! pitto, after his big feeling record, is back with a little help from joris voorn for a hot remix, using a killer bassline over a simple groove and tweaking the vocals for an effective game!

the make up the break up is the first release on bruno pronsatos own thesongsays label. its the longest track in his catalog (38 minutes), and an even deeper excursion into his stylized harmony. this track was originally a track uncompleted while making, æwhy cant we be like us. revisiting it roughly a year ago, bruno began to reword it. what began as simple attempt to create an ep track out of it became a monster. what monster you ask? in a few words, the monster that is brunos love of musicality and sound design. muscially speaking, we are on a ride somewhere between a slithery house track and a drugged out night out in chelsea, new york in the 60s - and thats a good thing because we get the entirety of the ride: the ups, the downs, the clouded mentality, the broken heart and perhaps the mended one. its happy, its sad - its something that you can dance to, but most importantly, its music that we think you can revisit for many years, as it somehow reflects us, our lives. a playful and extended journey through love and disaster, or at least the soundtrack to it.

the second release on the newly formed barcelona label they are changing it comes from barcelona based american dj/producer fluen. on this ep fluen gives us a glimpse into his production range delivering an ep that has a clear chicago/ny house influence , but manages to avoid the conga fever that has swept the scene as of late, and at the same time sounds very current. on the a side, things take off with better days, fun and very dancefloor oriented. the second track on the b side, mary says stands out right away thanks to a catchy piano riff and female cut up vocals,reminiscent of old chicago records. on the b side, fluen mixes things up a bit with a song that catches you from the get go. music remains starts very basic, with a dreamy piano line and a kick that lay the foundations for a song that could easily be a hit, simple, beautiful and very dancefloor friendly. the vocals wisely remind us that >people come and go, times do change and allà. but the music remains<. limited edition of 500 units

after a winter break and a with new focus on original and forward thinking house, boe is back for 2009 with one of the hottest detroit artists to break onto the scene in years. kris wadsworth is a man who truly has his own unique production style. for years the term minimal has been banded about for music with little soul, originality and that essence of dance music, a groove. kris is a guy whose interpretation of minimalistic music oozes all of these qualities and much, much more, stripped down, funked up house that takes the listener back to when house was raw, full of energy and brimming with soul. his production resembles that of an early herbert, crunching and twisting his way though drum samples and polished chords to create a sound that is simple and intoxicating yet difficult to copy. less, it seems, is most definitely more. dig is kris first four-track ep and showcases his sound through four slices of deep, groovy late night house. the first track the depths of is kris sound summed up in just under nine minutes. the first three minutes belong to a long intro that builds and builds through vox snippets, stab samples, synth chords and h-hats that ride the groove. the track breaks down only to kick back in with a chunky snare and trippy pads to whip the listener into a frenzy. macrotones is a wonky late night rhythm synth track that wouldnt sound out of place at fabric at 7am. on the flip, white bread kicks off where the depths of left off, a catchy rhythm with swinging stabs and moody chords. a growling, gut-moving baseline makes the track a real dance floor favourite. the final track on the ep is haunted house a deep houser with a delayed bassline perfect for those late-night moments.

the latest gigolo release is one for the summer! aptly titled hot it comes courtesy of ivano coppola and christian prommer, the former being one of italia s most respected dj s and the latter being, amongst other things, one of the main collaborators for hells critically acclaimed album teufelswerk. taking a sample from willie ninjas classic record hot and building a track around the chords and the vocal leads us to our starting point ivano coppola plastic mix!
ivano coppola has been the resident dj at milan s plastic club since 1992, so it is fair to say that he knows what works on a dance floor, or, to use a popular phrase, what is hot and what is not. it is with this historical knowledge that we find the genesis of our track. i found it necessary to go back in the past, to start producing once again in a 90 style - using samples. the next step was to come back into the future and reach out to christian prommer, highly respected by many including ivan i consider (christian prommer) one of the best producers of the moment! he loved the idea, the remix was huge, and so we decided to co-produce the record. simple!!!
but, for christian this was more then a remix, hence the co-production credit! i liked the idea of translating an early 90 s house-music-sample in to a sample-style-percussive-techno-tune. lots of live played drums and percussion in this one, of course. i only later learned that the sample we used is from one of my house music heroes, maws louie vega. naturally the record found its way into the hands of gigolo in the best way possible, and in the tradition of such a great record label – i played it at the gigolo night in munich and hell came to me dancing and took the tune into his heart.

digitaline, the swiss experts in organic grooves and trippy rhythms, are releasing the second record of zurich based label cityfox. the vinyl features 2 long tracks, both telling their own story. the title track seeking attention builds up slowly, a perfect tool to integrate in dj sets, and starts its full power towards minute 5:00. with the catchy vocals and perfectly simple percussion, seeking attention is for sure one of this years summer anthems. it has one thing in common with the b-side track altra - a smart vocal combined with an undeniably tricky groove that makes all of you dance, with no exception. summer can come!

vertex is an exploration in two parts. the a sideÆs vertex and the locus of points explore the trackier side of tejadaÆs work meant mostly for vinyl play. both tracks make good use of strong wavetable chorded sounds, which are modulated throughout. the rhythms of the chords make up the identity of the track with elements coming in and out. vertex showcases a more layered approach to take the track from a percussive to a smooth feel. the locus of points follows more of a straight up techno approach sounding simple and effective. the b-side explores the more melodic and arrangement based side of tejadaÆs work. liquid mirror is a track rich in layers. 3 modular synth layers provide the initial modulating melodic ground work which is then complimented by lush tejada keyboard work bringing the song to itÆs apex and then reducing it back to itÆs start all while backed by tejadaÆs powerful drum work. p.l.l. (which stands for phase locked loop, a process explored here) continues this theme in a less obvious way. modular synths and drum tracks start things off while midway a modulating melodic phrase is introduced playing back a bit differently every time. four songs in all showcasing tejadaÆs simple and complex approach to dance music.

show-b is making a triumphal procession through the heaven of arrangements and the musically modernistic housemusic. complex, but fleet footed, his rhythmic structures produce a soulful symbiosis with the music of long gone times of dance music. traditional elements, such as flutes or rhodes unite with sub basses, crisp kick drums and detriotesque bass lines, culminating in show-bs own definition of housemusic. shallowness, ordinarity and a simple sensation of contentment are not part of this definition.

based in strasbourg, florent is a very talented french artist who has already released a bunch of maxis on k2, modelisme, funktion, style rockets ... his simple view ep on modelisme had shown his flirting with deep music, his plus ep confirms his love for it ! plus is a beautiful, very groovy deep track, full of old school mellow tunes, with a very personal touch and varied influences. as remixer, modelisme welcomes the excellent jonas bering, master of the genre, mainly wellknown for his huge beautiful discography on kompakt. the result is a superb transformation with charming melodies and hypnotic layers, driven by a killer bass and subtil effects.

master rock is back on the track: besides touring the world and hosting nights at the infamous cocoon club frankfurt, c-rock is also one half of german deephouse-duo motorcitysoul that brought gems to you like keep on turning (feat. chez damier), mbali or aura. simple music released the highly rated technique album by motorcitysoul in 2008 incl. the ovasoul joint change you. it seems like there is not much time left for c-rock to do much more, however he found the time to produce a heavy oldschool hommage with a massive raw flavour.

after a break from solo production for his own blueprint label, during which he released a well-received album ( the dash ) on the mighty tresor, and a brace of singles as o/v/r (with regis), james ruskin returns to home-ground with a cracking two-tracker. sabre is a classic ruskin production, booming bottom-end and a mind-mangling filtered fx loop swirling around over the top. deceptively simple production that is definitely greater than the sum of its parts, as all good techno should be. on the flipside, massk follows a similar template, with only 5 or 6 parts throughout the whole track, but the subtle changes in arrangement lure the listener in to the deep and dark world of mr ruskin...
